RTF and PDF explained

RTF is a plain-text markup format for styled documents. Opening one in a text editor shows readable markup, which makes it unusually durable — but it supports only basic formatting.

PDF describes a page as a fixed arrangement of text, vector graphics and images. Unlike a word processor document, it is designed so the page looks identical everywhere — which is exactly why it is awkward to edit.

Where RTF files come from: Cross-application document exchange, especially from older software.
Where PDF is used: Contracts, invoices, reports, forms, academic papers and scanned documents.

Why convert RTF to PDF?

People make this switch when they run into the limits of RTF: complex layouts, images or modern document features. PDF is the better fit when sharing a finished document where the layout must not move.

RTF limitations that prompt the switch: Only basic formatting. Much larger than DOCX for the same content. Poor support for modern layout features.
What you give up: Genuinely hard to edit — it stores positioned glyphs, not paragraphs. Scanned PDFs contain no text at all until OCR is run.

What is preserved when converting RTF to PDF?

Both formats store the content without discarding data, so this conversion preserves it exactly. The file size may change because the two formats compress differently, but the content itself is unaffected.

A PDF full of scanned pages is a stack of pictures, not a document. Selecting text is impossible until OCR has been run over it.
