PNG and PDF explained

PNG is a lossless raster format built to replace GIF. It stores every pixel exactly as given and supports a full 8-bit alpha channel, which means genuine partial transparency rather than the single transparent colour GIF offers.

PDF describes a page as a fixed arrangement of text, vector graphics and images. Unlike a word processor document, it is designed so the page looks identical everywhere — which is exactly why it is awkward to edit.

Where PNG files come from: Screenshots, exported logos and UI assets, and anything designed rather than photographed.
Where PDF is used: Contracts, invoices, reports, forms, academic papers and scanned documents.

PNG is stronger at: Completely lossless — re-saving never degrades the image. Full alpha transparency, including soft edges and shadows. Sharp text and hard edges stay sharp.
PDF is stronger at: Looks identical on every device, in every viewer, when printed. Supports digital signatures, forms and embedded fonts. Universally readable without special software.

Why convert PNG to PDF?

Converting PNG images to PDF packages them into a single paginated document. That matters when you are submitting scans, assembling receipts, or sending several images to someone who should receive one file rather than an inbox full of attachments.

PNG limitations that prompt the switch: Much larger than JPEG or WebP for photographic content. No animation in practice (APNG exists but support is inconsistent). No native support for CMYK or print colour workflows.
What you give up: Genuinely hard to edit — it stores positioned glyphs, not paragraphs. Scanned PDFs contain no text at all until OCR is run.

Does converting PNG to PDF reduce quality?

Both formats store the content without discarding data, so this conversion preserves it exactly. The file size may change because the two formats compress differently, but the content itself is unaffected.

Converting a JPEG to PNG does not improve its quality. It freezes the image exactly as it already is, artefacts included, in a larger file.

A PDF full of scanned pages is a stack of pictures, not a document. Selecting text is impossible until OCR has been run over it.
