Turning pages that were scanned sideways
Rotation changes how each page is displayed, not the content on it. A PDF page carries a rotation value, and setting it tells every reader to turn that page ninety, a hundred and eighty or two hundred and seventy degrees. The text and images underneath are not touched, which is why this is instant even on a large document and why nothing is re-encoded.
The usual cause is a scanner that fed pages in landscape, or a phone that recorded the wrong orientation. Fixing it here is permanent for anyone who opens the file afterwards — unlike turning the page in your reader, which only changes your own view.
- Per page or all of them
- A batch scan often has a few pages the wrong way up rather than all of them, so rotation can be applied to a range instead of the whole document.
- Text stays selectable
- Because nothing is rasterised, a rotated page can still be searched and copied exactly as before.
