MOV and OGG explained

MOV is Apple's QuickTime container. Structurally it is very close to MP4 — the two share an ancestor — but MOV files often use codecs like ProRes that general-purpose players cannot decode.

OGG here means Ogg Vorbis, a royalty-free lossy codec that predates Opus. It is competitive with AAC and remains common in games.

Why convert MOV to OGG?

This is not really a format swap — it is extraction. An MOV file carries a video track and an audio track side by side, and converting to OGG discards the picture and keeps the sound. People do it to turn a lecture, interview, podcast recording or music video into something they can listen to without the video, at a fraction of the file size.

MOV limitations that prompt the switch: Windows and Android support is inconsistent. Browsers generally will not play it. ProRes files are enormous.
What you give up: Apple devices do not support it natively. Largely superseded by Opus.

Does converting MOV to OGG reduce quality?

MOV stores your data exactly; OGG does not. Some detail is discarded permanently in exchange for a much smaller file, which is usually the right trade for sharing and publishing. Keep your MOV original if it is the only copy — the conversion cannot be undone.
