MOV and M4A explained

MOV is Apple's QuickTime container. Structurally it is very close to MP4 — the two share an ancestor — but MOV files often use codecs like ProRes that general-purpose players cannot decode.

M4A is an MP4 container holding only audio — usually AAC, sometimes Apple Lossless. The extension exists mainly so players know not to look for a video track.

Where MOV files come from
iPhone and Mac screen recordings, and professional video editing.
Where M4A is used
iTunes purchases, Apple Music downloads, voice memos and audiobooks.

MOV vs M4A

The two formats solve different problems, which is why converting between them involves trade-offs rather than a straight upgrade.

Excellent on Apple platforms. Supports high-quality editing codecs such as ProRes. Handles alpha channels for compositing.
M4A is stronger at
Excellent quality per byte. Proper chapter support, which is why audiobooks use it. Strong metadata and artwork handling.

Why convert MOV to M4A?

This is not really a format swap — it is extraction. An MOV file carries a video track and an audio track side by side, and converting to M4A discards the picture and keeps the sound. People do it to turn a lecture, interview, podcast recording or music video into something they can listen to without the video, at a fraction of the file size.

MOV limitations that prompt the switch
Windows and Android support is inconsistent. Browsers generally will not play it. ProRes files are enormous.
What you give up
Less universal than MP3 on older or cheaper hardware. The extension hides what codec is actually inside.

Does converting MOV to M4A reduce quality?

Both formats store the content without discarding data, so this conversion preserves it exactly. The file size may change because the two formats compress differently, but the content itself is unaffected.
