WebM and AAC explained

WebM is an open, royalty-free container built for the web, holding VP8/VP9 or AV1 video with Vorbis or Opus audio. It exists specifically so browsers can ship video support without patent licensing.

AAC is the successor to MP3 and is the default audio codec for MP4 video, Apple Music and YouTube. At the same bitrate it generally sounds noticeably better than MP3.

Where WebM files come from
Web video, and exports from browser-based recording tools.
Where AAC is used
Streaming services, video soundtracks and Apple devices.

WebM vs AAC

The two formats solve different problems, which is why converting between them involves trade-offs rather than a straight upgrade.

Why convert WebM to AAC?

This is not really a format swap — it is extraction. A WebM file carries a video track and an audio track side by side, and converting to AAC discards the picture and keeps the sound. People do it to turn a lecture, interview, podcast recording or music video into something they can listen to without the video, at a fraction of the file size.

WebM limitations that prompt the switch
Poor support in desktop players, editors and on TVs. Slower to encode than H.264. Not accepted by many video platforms as an upload format.
What you give up
Still lossy. Patent licensing applies to encoders.

Does converting WebM to AAC reduce quality?

WebM stores your data exactly; AAC does not. Some detail is discarded permanently in exchange for a much smaller file, which is usually the right trade for sharing and publishing. Keep your WebM original if it is the only copy — the conversion cannot be undone.

The soundtrack is decoded and re-encoded. Quality is limited by whatever the video already contained — extracting to FLAC cannot add detail back.
