TSV and XLSX explained

TSV is CSV with tab characters as separators. Because tabs almost never appear inside data fields, it sidesteps most of CSV's quoting problems.

XLSX is Excel's modern format — a ZIP of XML holding cells, formulas, formatting, multiple sheets, charts and pivot tables.

Where TSV files come from: Bioinformatics, data pipelines and anywhere fields contain commas.
Where XLSX is used: Excel, Google Sheets exports and business reporting systems.

Why convert TSV to XLSX?

People make this switch when they run into the limits of TSV: handing files to non-technical recipients. XLSX is the better fit when the data needs calculation, formatting or more than one sheet.

TSV limitations that prompt the switch: Tabs are invisible, making manual editing error-prone. Less universally recognised than CSV.
What you give up: Harder to parse programmatically than CSV. Formula compatibility varies between applications.

What is preserved when converting TSV to XLSX?

Both formats store the content without discarding data, so this conversion preserves it exactly. The file size may change because the two formats compress differently, but the content itself is unaffected.
