What “uploaded” normally means. On most online converters, pressing the button copies your file across the internet onto a computer owned by that website. That copy is what the word “upload” means, and it is the part nobody explains.

What happens instead. This site does not do it. There is no server here that receives files, so your RAR file is read, converted and handed back by the browser you are using right now. It never travels — so there is no copy to store, read, leak or hand over.

An archive is a container, so its contents are whatever you were trying to keep together — which is usually everything above at once. It matters more than it sounds, because of what archives usually are:

RAR and ZIP explained

RAR is a proprietary archive format. Extraction is freely implementable, but creating RAR archives requires licensed software — which is why most tools, including this one, can open them but not create them.

ZIP bundles multiple files into one and compresses them. Its indispensable property is that every operating system can open it with no extra software.

Why convert RAR to ZIP?
