PDF and WebP explained

PDF describes a page as a fixed arrangement of text, vector graphics and images. Unlike a word processor document, it is designed so the page looks identical everywhere — which is exactly why it is awkward to edit.

WebP is a Google-developed format that offers both lossy and lossless modes, transparency, and animation in one container. In its lossy mode it typically produces files around 25–35% smaller than JPEG at comparable visual quality.

Where PDF files come from: Contracts, invoices, reports, forms, academic papers and scanned documents.
Where WebP is used: Modern websites, and increasingly the default export from web-focused design tools.

Why convert PDF to WebP?

A PDF page is a set of drawing instructions, not a picture. Converting to WebP runs those instructions and captures the result as pixels, which is what you want when something needs an image rather than a document — a thumbnail, a slide, a forum post, or a system that only accepts images.

PDF limitations that prompt the switch: Genuinely hard to edit — it stores positioned glyphs, not paragraphs. Scanned PDFs contain no text at all until OCR is run. Can be large when it contains high-resolution images.
What you give up: Desktop applications and older software often cannot open it. Some photo printing services and older phones reject it.

Does converting PDF to WebP reduce quality?

Both formats store the content without discarding data, so this conversion preserves it exactly. The file size may change because the two formats compress differently, but the content itself is unaffected.

A PDF full of scanned pages is a stack of pictures, not a document. Selecting text is impossible until OCR has been run over it.

WebP is not always smaller. For simple graphics with few colours, a well-optimised PNG can still win.
