OGG and MP3 explained

OGG here means Ogg Vorbis, a royalty-free lossy codec that predates Opus. It is competitive with AAC and remains common in games.

MP3 is the lossy audio format that made digital music portable. Its patents expired in 2017, which is part of why it remains ubiquitous — anyone can implement it freely.

Where OGG files come from: Game audio, Spotify's older streams and open-source projects.
Where MP3 is used: Music libraries, podcasts and voice recordings.

Why convert OGG to MP3?

People make this switch when they run into the limits of OGG: sharing with iPhone users or general distribution. MP3 is the better fit when you need audio that will play anywhere, on anything, without question.

OGG limitations that prompt the switch: Apple devices do not support it natively. Largely superseded by Opus. Poor support in consumer hardware.
What you give up: Lossy — discarded detail cannot be recovered. Beaten on quality-per-byte by AAC and Opus.

Does converting OGG to MP3 reduce quality?

Both OGG and MP3 are lossy, so this is a re-encode: the file is decoded and compressed again. At the default quality setting the difference is very hard to see, but each successive re-encode compounds. If you will need the file again later, keep the OGG original rather than converting back and forth.

Converting MP3 to a lossless format like FLAC does not restore quality. It produces a larger file containing exactly the same degraded audio.
