MKV and M4A explained

Matroska is a container designed to hold essentially anything: any codec, unlimited audio tracks, subtitle tracks, chapters and attachments in one file. It is the format of choice for archiving films with multiple languages.

M4A is an MP4 container holding only audio — usually AAC, sometimes Apple Lossless. The extension exists mainly so players know not to look for a video track.

Where MKV files come from: Media archives, anime and film collections, and high-quality recordings.
Where M4A is used: iTunes purchases, Apple Music downloads, voice memos and audiobooks.

Why convert MKV to M4A?

This is not really a format swap — it is extraction. An MKV file carries a video track and an audio track side by side, and converting to M4A discards the picture and keeps the sound. People do it to turn a lecture, interview, podcast recording or music video into something they can listen to without the video, at a fraction of the file size.

MKV limitations that prompt the switch: Browsers will not play it. Many TVs, phones and editors reject it. Not accepted by social platforms.
What you give up: Less universal than MP3 on older or cheaper hardware. The extension hides what codec is actually inside.
