AIFF and MP3 explained

AIFF is Apple's uncompressed audio format, functionally equivalent to WAV but with better metadata support and big-endian byte order.

MP3 is the lossy audio format that made digital music portable. Its patents expired in 2017, which is part of why it remains ubiquitous — anyone can implement it freely.

Where MP3 is used: Music libraries, podcasts and voice recordings.

The two formats solve different problems, which is why converting between them involves trade-offs rather than a straight upgrade.

Why convert AIFF to MP3?

People make this switch when they run into the limits of AIFF: distribution, or interchange with Windows tools where WAV is safer. MP3 is the better fit when you need audio that will play anywhere, on anything, without question.

There is also a size argument: AIFF stores data with little or no compression, so the MP3 version is normally dramatically smaller for the same content.

AIFF limitations that prompt the switch: Very large files. Less universally supported than WAV.
What you give up: Lossy — discarded detail cannot be recovered. Beaten on quality-per-byte by AAC and Opus.

Does converting AIFF to MP3 reduce quality?

AIFF stores your data exactly; MP3 does not. Some detail is discarded permanently in exchange for a much smaller file, which is usually the right trade for sharing and publishing. Keep your AIFF original if it is the only copy — the conversion cannot be undone.

Converting MP3 to a lossless format like FLAC does not restore quality. It produces a larger file containing exactly the same degraded audio.
