3GP and OGG explained

3GP is a cut-down MP4 variant designed for the bandwidth and storage limits of early mobile phones. Resolution and bitrate are typically very low.

OGG here means Ogg Vorbis, a royalty-free lossy codec that predates Opus. It is competitive with AAC and remains common in games.

Why convert 3GP to OGG?

This is not really a format swap — it is extraction. A 3GP file carries a video track and an audio track side by side, and converting to OGG discards the picture and keeps the sound. People do it to turn a lecture, interview, podcast recording or music video into something they can listen to without the video, at a fraction of the file size.

3GP limitations that prompt the switch: Low resolution and quality. Almost no modern support. Nothing to gain by keeping it.
